University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research
For the last five years, UM has hosted an annual conference
on Undergraduate Research, graciously sponsored by the Vice
President for Research. In this day-long conference students
from across campus make poster presentations, research
presentations (based upon a research paper), exhibits, or
present original creative works (such as performances).
UMCUR is designed to highlight the original scholarly and
creative activity of UM undergraduate students in good standing.
There are many opportunities for undergraduate research.
Undergraduates can participate in research with faculty,
get research scholarships both on and off campus, find
both unpaid research opportunities during the academic
year and during the summer (both on and off campus), and
there are the lists of departments at colleges and
universities offering research courses.
There are also many resources available on the Web for
undergraduate research: information on how to conduct
research, templates and information for presenting your
research, publishing research and professional associations
that encourage student presentations. And information on
student profiles at various higher educational facilities
is still evolving and developing.
One superb resource is a power point template for making
professional posters from the University of Montana Website.
In a modern college or university setting, there are many
opportunities for undergraduate research. The more we learn,
the more we realize we do not know! Many subjects need
research and by doing undergraduate research (assuming you
do it properly), you end up doing well by doing good. Some
of the subjects that have undergraduate research
opportunities are:
- Anthropology
- Asian Studies
- Biochemistry
- Biology
- Microbiology
- Chemistry
- Communication Studies
- Computer Science
- Economics
- English
- Environmental Studies
- Foreign Languages and Literatures
- Geography
- Geology

- Linguistics
- Math
- Native American Studies
- Philosophy
- Physics

There are even undergraduate research opportunities in
Liberal Studies!
Awards are given for the top papers and the top posters in five
different areas: Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences,
Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences.
We will be adding articles to this website about Undergraduate
Research as time goes on. We hope to be able to tell you about
different kinds of opportunities that are available, and what
you need to do to be prepared to apply for them. With good
planning and a little luck, you may just find some research
that you enjoy and suites your lifestyle.
